MOSCOW, September 25 (RIA Novosti) - A military operation against the Islamic State (IS) in Syria is possible only with the UN Security Council's authorization, Osman Faruk Logoglu, a member of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, told International Information Agency Rossiya Segodnya on Thursday.
"The majority of Turks think that according to the UN Charter, a military operation in a foreign country, namely Syria, should be based on the UN Security Council's decision," Logoglu said.
"One could say that the IS is such a horrible, dangerous and barbarous organization that it is not necessary to wait for the UN Security Council's decision. We think, this approach is unacceptable and extremely dangerous," he added. "Legal basis is needed, and only the UN Security Council can provide this basis."
Logoglu also noted that Turkey could contribute to the fight against the IS if it eliminated the IS resources in the country, cut the supply chains of funds, weapons and manpower, and prohibited illegal delivery of oil from Iraq and Syria.
The IS, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), is a radical Sunni group that has been fighting the Syrian government since 2012. In June 2014, it started launching attacks in Iraq.
The rapid advance of the extremists prompted the United States to establish a multinational coalition against the IS and extend the operation to Syria. Washington has carried out a number of airstrikes against IS positions in Syria. Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates have reportedly taken part in the attacks as well.
