MOSCOW, September 25 (RIA Novosti) - US citizen Matthew Miller, arrested in April in North Korea for violating his tourist status, has begun his six-year sentence in a labor camp Thursday, CNN reported.
A photo of Miller, "dressed in a blue-gray prison garment with the number 107 and his head shaved" was released by North Korean officials on Wednesday, the channel reported.
Miller was sentenced to six years of work in a corrective labor camp on September 14.
The court said in a trial that Miller tore up his visa in Pyongyang Airport on April 10 and expressed his ambition to experience prison life to investigate the human rights situation in the country.
The ruling came with no possibility of appeal. The charge for espionage came under Article 64 of the country's Criminal Code, according to which a delinquent may receive a sentence of five to 10 years.
The other two US citizens held in North Korea are Kenneth Bae and Jeffrey Edward Fowle. The charges against the two are propaganda and espionage-related.
The US State Department has warned its citizens of arbitrary arrest and detention in North Korea as nine Americans have been detained in the country since 1996 with three of them, mentioned above, still in detention.
