BEIRUT, September 26 (RIA Novosti) - The United States and its allies on Friday morning launched a new round of airstrikes against oil refineries held by Islamic State (IS) militants in Syria, according to Al Mayadeen television channel.
The oil installations in eastern Deir al-Zour province have been bombed for a second consecutive day, according to the channel. The coalition warplanes also hit Islamic State headquarters in the town of Mayadin and militants’ positions in Al-Hasakah Governorate in northeastern Syria.
Last week, Lebanese newspaper Ad-Diyar reported that the IS receives three million dollars from Iraq and Syria's oil every day. The jihadist group controls 11 oil fields in those two countries and sells the oil on illicit markets in Turkey, Jordan and Iraq.
On Thursday, the Pentagon said that the coalition stroke 12 oil refiners, located in eastern Syria and controlled by Islamic State.
Earlier in September, the United States announced the formation of an international coalition to combat the insurgents. Washington and its allies have already carried out a number of airstrikes on IS position both in Syria and Iraq.
The IS, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), has been fighting against the Syrian government since 2012. In 2014, IS militants spread through northern and western Iraq as well and declared a caliphate on the territories under its control.
