MOSCOW, September 28 (RIA Novosti) - A Kenyan runner, Dennis Kimetto, has set a new world record, winning the Berliner Marathon on Sunday, Deutsche Welle reports.
"I'm ready, my preparation has been good and I'm full of confidence," he said in a pre-contest statement, published by Business Insider on Sunday night. “If the conditions are right, we can break the world record."
The conditions seemed to be perfectly right, as Kimetto managed to beat the marathon world record by 26 seconds. He finished the race in an astounding 2:02:57. Another Kenyan runner Emmanuel Mutai came hot on his heels in second at 2:03:13. Kimetto became the first man to finish the marathon in less than two hours and three minutes.
The winner of the women’s race in Berlin was Tirfi Tsegaye, who completed the race within 2:20:18. She was followed by her Ethiopian compatriot Feyse Tadese, who came to the finish line seven seconds later.
The Berlin marathon is one of the biggest and most popular sport events worldwide. Approximately 40,000 runners from 130 countries are reported to have taken part in the race this year.
