MOSCOW, September 30 (RIA Novosti) - Rescue efforts at Japan’s Mount Ontake have been put on hold due to bad weather and continued volcanic activity, The Japan Times reported Tuesday.
"Volcanic tremors are becoming bigger since early morning and its intensity is almost the same as that observed on Saturday night," the newspaper cited an official from Japan’s Meteorological Agency as saying.
As of Monday, 12 mountain climbers have been officially declared dead, according to the newspaper. Rescue workers been unable to retrieve the bodies of 24 others.
The 3,067-meter (10,062-feet) high Mount Ontake erupted at about 11:53 a.m. local time (02:53 GMT) on Saturday. A number of international flights have been canceled because of the eruption.
