MOSCOW, September 30 (RIA Novosti) - Three Israeli combatants, who took part in military operations during the recent 2014 Israel-Gaza conflict, have committed suicide due to psychological trauma, Anadolu Agency reports.
According to Israeli Daily Maariv, the three soldiers suffered from mental disorders attributable to their participation in the latest 50-day conflict in the Gaza Strip. The military offensive started on July, 7 and has taken the lives of 2,150 Palestinians. About 11,000 people have been injured, with thousands more now homeless.
Recent studies into suicide attempts, show that the risk of mental illness is very high among soldiers who have experienced the atrocities of war. They frequently suffer from major depression, disturbing dreams or memories, post-traumatic stress and other psychological problems, which can have a negative effect on their mentality and drive them to suicide.
The three men served in the Golani Brigade, an elite Israeli infantry brigade actively involved in the latest Israel-Gaza military campaign.
The campaign finished at the end of August when a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas was signed.
