STRASBOURG, October 1 (RIA Novosti), Daria Chernyshova — Western politicians attacking Russia with regard to invading Ukraine have a simplistic viewing of the situation and did not attempt to look at Ukraine’s history, British delegate Edward Leigh said during PACE debate on the crisis in Ukraine on Wednesday.
“EU has persistently sought to push its boundaries eastward against Russia’s intentions, Ukraine has a complex historical situation and many people who articulate simplistic solutions about Russia invading Ukraine, have not made an attempt to look at Ukrainian history,” Leigh said, adding that Ukraine has historical division between the country’s east and west.
“Although we can go on attacking Russia, we have to be realistic about this. We have to realize that they have legitimate interests in this area,” Edward Leigh stressed.
The relations between Russia and the West have deteriorated amid the Ukrainian crisis, as the United States and European Union keep on blaming Moscow for meddling in Ukraine’s internal affairs. Since the beginning of the military conflict, Kiev and the West have been accusing Russia of sending troops and weapons to independence supporters in Ukraine’s southeastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk.
Russia denied these claims pointing out that the West has never supported its accusations with any trustworthy evidence.
