MOSCOW, October 2 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian National Women’s Volleyball Team defeated Bulgaria at the start of the second round of the 2014 FIVB Volleyball World Championships in Modena, Italy on Tuesday, with a score of 3:1, Izvestia reported.
This round’s European champions started out with a tough first game against the Bulgarian women, trailing 15:16 until the second technical time-out. However, a successful offensive, led by Yekaterina Gamova, combined with a tough defense allowed Russia to come out ahead in the first match, 25:23.
Led by Coach Yuri Marichev, the women went on to win their second match 25:15; Regina Moroz scored three points back-to-back with a successful blocking strategy.
The team didn’t fare as well in the third match, losing 26:28, but rallied for the fourth match, defeating the Bulgarians 25:19.
Today in the second round of the second group round, the Russians are set to meet with the Turkish team.
China defeated Germany 0:3, currently leading the pack in pool E with 11 points. Russia presently stands 3rd in pool F with 9 points, behind Brazil and the United States, with 11 and 12 points, respectively.
