MOSCOW, October 2 (RIA Novosti) - Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova has entered the quarterfinals at the China Open, defeating Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro, Rossiyskaya Gazeta reported.
The match, which lasted a little over an hour and a half, resulted in a 6:1, 7:6 (3) score.
In the second round with a score of 5:4, Sharapova was playing for the match, but Navarro managed to hang on a while longer.
Moving on to the quarterfinals, Sharapova will play either fellow Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova or Germany’s Anjelica Kerber.
Winning the tournament would make Sharapova the second-highest ranking tennis player in the world; she’d also win the tournament’s prize money: over 5.25 million USD.
