MOSCOW, October 3 (RIA Novosti) - The Central Government Offices in Hong Kong have been closed for the day as protesters have surrounded key government buildings, the Hong Kong Government said Friday.
"As the access roads leading to the Central Government Offices [CGO] in Tamar are now blocked, the Administration Wing announced that the CGO will be temporarily closed today," the Hong Kong Government informed on its official website.
"Staff working in the Central Government Offices are advised not to go to the workplace and should work in accordance with the contingency plans of their respective bureaus or departments. All visits to the CGO will be postponed or canceled," the statement reads.
Thousands of people have taken to the streets of Hong Kong in recent days to take part in protests against the Chinese government's plans to control the 2017 Hong Kong election.
Protesters claim Beijing has gone back on its pledge to allow universal suffrage in Hong Kong, which was promised a high degree of autonomy when it was handed back to China by Britain in 1997.
