Russia and Uruguay have agreed to enhance Russian imports of agricultural products and foodstuffs, the press-service of the Russian Ministry of Economic Development said in a statement Monday.

MOSCOW, October 6 (RIA Novosti) – Russia and Uruguay have agreed to enhance Russian imports of agricultural products and foodstuffs, the press-service of the Russian Ministry of Economic Development said in a statement Monday.

"The issues of enhanced imports of agricultural products and foodstuffs from Uruguay and prospects of Russian companies' participation in infrastructure, transport and energy projects were discussed during the meeting [between Russian Deputy Minister of Economic Development Alexei Likhachev and Uruguay's Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Luis Porto]," the statement said.

Uruguay and Russia, which currently receives 3.8 percent ($356 million-worth) of Uruguay's total export, also plans to enhance business relations between Russian and Uruguayan companies.

Russia has imposed a one-year ban on food imports from the European Union, the United States, Australia, Canada and Norway in response to economic sanctions that western countries have introduced against Moscow, blaming it for meddling in Ukraine's internal affairs – claims that Russia has repeatedly denied.

The food ban targets meat, fish, poultry and milk products, as well as nuts, fruits and vegetables.
