KIEV, October 7 (RIA Novosti) - 112 trucks with humanitarian aid from Germany have passed customs clearance in Poland and entered Ukraine, the deputy head of Ukraine's Fiscal Service Anatoliy Makarenko said Tuesday.
"Tonight at the Dorohusk-Jagodzin customs checkpoint on the Polish side Polish and Ukrainian customs officers conducted a joint customs control and customs clearance of a 112 truck humanitarian convoy from Germany", Ukrainian information agency UNIAN quoted Makarenko as saying.
He stressed that customs clearance occurred in Poland and there was no need to repeat the procedure on the Ukrainian side of the border.
Following an initiative by German Minister of Economic Cooperation and Development Gerd Mueller, the German government has sent humanitarian aid from 17 German cities to Ukraine. The convoy is carrying building materials, space heaters, blankets and rollaway beds, according to the Spiegel magazine.
In April, Kiev forces started a military operation against independence supporters in eastern Ukraine, which according to UN figures claimed the lives of over 3,600 people and left 8,500 injured. On September 5, a ceasefire agreement was reached at a Contact Group meeting in Minsk, followed by the adoption of a memorandum on September 19 that outlined specific steps for the truce implementation.
The opposing sides have repeatedly accused one another of violating the truce, although the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) said the ceasefire was generally holding.
Due to the conflict, Ukraine's southeastern regions have witnessed a severe humanitarian catastrophe, as many citizens have struggled without clean water, electricity and other essentials.
