ANKARA, October 7 (RIA Novosti) -All the military might of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group is currently being thrown against the Kurdish autonomy in Syria, a Kurdish politician and a former member of the Turkish parliament, Osman Ozcelik told RIA Novosti on Tuesday.
"It is becoming obvious that the IS has given up fighting against Assad and is concentrating all its efforts on war against the Kurds," Ozcelik said, adding that what is currently going on in the area of the Syrian town of Kobani can be best described as "genocide over Kurds." Ozcelik added that the Kurdish lands are rich with resources, wanted by many.
"At the moment, Islamic State is conducting attacks against Kobani, and if they manage to capture it in full, they will attack the remaining two Kurdish cantons," Ozcelik said.
According to Ozcelik, the Syrian Kurds fighting for Kobani cannot defeat the Islamic State without the help of Turkey as they have been cut off from the other two cantons. "But it [Turkey] does not want to interfere and Kurds cannot receive weapons from their allies which could have been brought via the Turkish [territory]. In fact, this non-interference will lead to the elimination of Kurdish population in Syria," Ozcelik concluded.
The IS, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS), or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), has been fighting the Syrian government since 2012. In June 2014, the group extended its attacks to northern and western Iraq, declaring a caliphate on the territories under its control in both countries.
Islamic State militants have been besieging Kobani, also known as Ayn al-Arab, which is one of the largest towns in the Kurdish region bordering Turkey, for the last three weeks.
