MOSCOW, October 7 (RIA Novosti) - Russia and Venezuela share the same views on important international issues such as the situation in Ukraine and in the Middle East, as well as many other current affairs, Russian Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich told RIA Novosti on Tuesday.

"Russia and Venezuela show unity in assessing what is happening in Ukraine, in approaches to the settlement of the Middle East issues. Our countries express similar positions in the UN [United Nations], HRC [Human Rights Council]," Lukashevich said.

"Venezuela is Russia's second [-largest] trade and economic partner in Latin America after Brazil," Lukashevich said.

"Our investment cooperation is based on joint projects in the energy sector, first and foremost, oil and gas field development," Lukashevich stated.

The plans to further develop cooperation between the two countries also include joint development of offshore fields, and construction of thermal power plant in Venezuela, among other projects. The countries are also cooperating in the military-technical sector.

Rafael Ramirez, Venezuela's Foreign Affairs minister, is set to arrive in Moscow on October 8 to hold talks with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov. Both parties intend to deepen their cooperation, Lukashevich said. In particular, the development of Venezuela's offshore drilling capabilities, planned to begin soon, and to continue the joint venture between both nations to increase oil recovery.

This is Ramirez's first visit to Russia as the head of the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry. The upcoming talks are to give a new impetus to the Russian-Venezuelan relations and to affirm the mutual desire to continue developing the strategic partnership of the two countries.
