MOSCOW, October 8 (RIA Novosti) - Transgender Eurovision winner Conchita Wurst sang on Wednesday in front of the European Parliament building in Brussels in order to send a message of non-discrimination, tolerance and respect for all people regardless of their gender and sexual orientation, Times of Malta reported on Wednesday.
"I really want to reach as many people as possible," said the 25-year-old Austrian singer, stressing that equal rights, including the right for the same sex marriage, should be guaranteed for all people.
The event was organized by members of the European Parliament in order to promote the idea of “love without fear” and support the EU Roadmap against homophobia and sexual discriminations, as reported by Euranet Plus.
“The wonderful signal for openness and anti-discrimination that the people of Europe gave Conchita Wurst with their votes must be translated [...] into forging a society and legal framework allowing everyone to live and to love without fear,” said Austrian politician and Vice-President of the European Parliament Ulrike Lunacek.
However, the idea to pay due to sexual diversity and promote same sex marriages was welcomed not by all European politicians. For instance, German politician Beatrix von Storch claimed that Wurst’s concert was completely unnecessary and criticized the constant public attention to sexual orientation, as reported by Euronet Plus. According to the Independent, her Bulgarian MEP colleague Angel Dzambazki took an even tougher stand, calling the Austrian singer “dangerous” and saying that European countries should not tolerate such perversity.
Conchita Wurst became a winner of the Eurovision Song Contest, which took place in Copenhagen in May 2014. From then on, she has performed during various bisexual, transgender, lesbian and gay occasions all over Europe.
