MOSCOW, October 8 (RIA Novosti) - A total lunar eclipse will be visible on Wednesday by residents of Russian Far East, Siberia and the Trans-Urals, Asia, North America and Australia, the United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) reported on its website.

The lunar eclipse is the second in 2014 and will begin on Wednesday, October 8 at 4:00 a.m. EDT (08:00 GMT), according to NASA. The total lunar eclipse will reach its fullness after two and a half hours. NASA's official website will broadcast the lunar event live and will feature NASA moon experts to answer questions from viewers during a live web chat scheduled to begin at 3:00 a.m. EDT (07:00 GMT).

Residents of the Russian Far East, Siberia, the United States, eastern Australia and Canada will be able to see the full lunar eclipse.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the earth, during its orbit around the sun, comes between the sun and the moon. This causes the planet to cast a shadow which blocks sunlight that normally reflects off of the moon. A total lunar eclipse can only happen when the earth, moon, and sun are perfectly aligned. During the event, the moon will appear red due to red and orange light being scattered by the atmosphere, an effect is known as the "blood moon."

The eclipse will be the fourth in the tetrad of lunar eclipses in 2014 to 2015. The first of which could be seen in April. Two more eclipses will occur on April 4 and September 28, 2015.
