MOSCOW, October 9 (RIA Novosti) - The global response to the spread of the Ebola virus disease is "slower-than-the-virus," the President of Sierra Leone, Ernest Bai Koroma said at the World Bank's meeting on Ebola epidemic on Thursday.

"This slower-than-the-virus response needs to change," Ernest Bai Koroma said, speaking via video conference. He urged to send "millions of dollars, hundreds of doctors and thousands of nurses" to Sierra Leone.

On Wednesday, the president of the World Bank, Jim Kim, had also admitted that the international community had "failed miserably" in its response to the spread of the deadly virus, while earlier on Thursday UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for a 20-fold increase in international anti-Ebola assistance to West African countries.

The Ebola virus is transmitted through direct contact with the bodily fluids of those infected. Though there is no officially approved medication for the disease, several countries, including Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Japan are working on developing Ebola vaccines.

According to the latest figures by the World Health Organization (WHO), the current outbreak has already claimed more than 3,870 lives.
