In many ways, this airport symbolizes the plight of modern Ukraine: a new seven-story terminal with a capacity of 3,100 passengers per hour was opened there in May, 2012, prior to the Euro 2012 association football championship. However, this year the airport has been a gambit in the struggle between Ukraine’s “Maidan” government in Kiev and separatists fighting for Donetsk’s independence. This struggle has continued despite an official ceasefire.
