MOSCOW, October 10 (RIA Novosti) – Eight people have been arrested and two police cars and a local store have been damaged amid protests in St. Louis, Missouri, metropolitan police spokesperson Schron Jackson told RIA Novosti Friday.
"There were a total of eight arrests during civil disobedience," Jackson said, noting that one person was detained for possession of marijuana, two - for unlawful assembly and another two - for property damage.
"One St. Louis police officer was hit in the arm with a brick," Jackson added, saying that two vehicles from the St. Louis police department were damaged, along with a local medicine shop.
Protests erupted in St. Louis on Wednesday night, in the Shaw neighborhood, after an off-duty white police officer shot dead 18-year-old African-American teenager Vonderrick Myers. According to local police, the officer returned the fire after Myers fired three shots at him.
The officer who shot and killed Myers has been placed on administrative leave, and an investigation is underway.
The death of Myers is the second such incident in St. Louis County. In August, police officer Darren Wilson, also white, shot dead Michael Brown, an 18-year-old African American, in Ferguson. The killing led to massive protests, which forced Missouri Governor Jay Nixon to issue a state of emergency in the city.
On September 4, US Attorney General Eric Holder announced a sweeping federal civil rights investigation into the Ferguson Police Department.
