MOSCOW, October 10 (RIA Novosti) - Teresa Romero Ramos, a nurse at a hospital in Madrid who tested positive for the Ebola virus will receive the experimental drug ZMapp, RTVE broadcaster reported Friday.
According to the RTVE broadcaster, the experimental drug was brought from Belgium and will be administered to the infected nurse, whose condition is now critical but stable.
Two American aid workers who contracted Ebola while working in Liberia became the first humans to be treated with ZMapp. Both recovered and were released from hospital in August.
In Spain the ZMapp drug was administered to the deceased missionary Miguel Pajares. Another Ebola patient, Manuel Garcia Viejo, did not receive the drug because it was out of stocks worldwide, he also died.
So far, Teresa Romero Ramos has been treated with a hyperimmune serum, taken from a person who has recovered from Ebola, and an antiviral.
According to the RTVE broadcaster, there are another thirteen people in isolation and undergoing observation at the hospital, where Teresa Romero Ramos is treated.
On October 6, Ramos tested positive for Ebola after treating Spanish priest Manuel Garcia Viejo, who became infected with virus while assisting patients in Sierra Leone. Garcia Viejo died in a Madrid hospital on September 25 and was the first European to succumb to the current Ebola outbreak.
The Ebola virus is transmitted through direct contact with the bodily fluids of those infected. Though there is no officially approved medication for the disease, several countries, including Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Japan are working on developing Ebola vaccines.
