MOSCOW, October 11 (RIA Novosti) - NASA scientists have published the images of what they have called The Pumpkin Sun. The images of the star look very much like the face of a Halloween “jack-o-lantern’, with the active regions of the star providing a similar flickering effect.
NASA’s official website says the active regions “appear brighter because those are areas that emit more light and energy - markers of an intense and complex set of magnetic fields hovering in the sun’s atmosphere, the corona.”
The images were taken by the Solar Dynamics Observatory.
Four of the images were in 335, 193, 171 and 304 angstrom extreme ultraviolet light.
The fifth was a blend of 171 and 193 angstrom light.
