CAIRO, October 12 (RIA Novosti) - Donor countries that took part in a conference in Cairo, aimed to raise money to rebuild the Gaza Strip, promised to provide a total of $5.4 billion for Gaza reconstruction, Norwegian Foreign Minister Borge Brende said after the three-day-long forum ended.
President of the State of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas announced at the conference that the rebuilding of Gaza requires $4 billion.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Sisi, whose government negotiated the ceasefire that ended the most recent conflict in Gaza, said that a comprehensive agreement must be reached ensuring that the status quo is not returned.
On August 26, the Palestinian Authority and Israel with the mediation of the Egyptian government agreed to an open-ended truce following 50 days of military operations by Israel, targeting the Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip.
According to UN estimates, the conflict killed over 2,100 Palestinians and 71 Israelis. Thousands of houses were ruined.
