Russia's first Formula One racing competition kicked off Sunday in Sochi.

MOSCOW, October 12 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's first Formula One racing competition kicked off Sunday in Sochi.

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton has claimed the pole position for the race during Saturday's qualifying. Russian driver Daniil Kvyat racing for Toro Rosso team started today's race from the fifth place.

The Sochi Autodrome is 5.854 kilometers (2.637 miles) long and has 12 right turns and six left turns. The maximum speed that can be achieved on the track is about 320 km/h (199 mph). The venue can seat as many as 55,000 spectators.

The 2014 Russian Grand Prix, running over 53 laps, or 309.745 kilometers (192.475 miles), takes place in the southern resort city of Sochi from October 10 to October 12.
