MOSCOW, October 13 (RIA Novosti) – More protests are expected in the St. Louis area in the US state of Missouri, including the suburban city of Ferguson, where police recently shot dead two 18-year-old African-American teenagers, a statement on the event's website said Monday.
"We'll be hosting a series of actions throughout the Ferguson and St. Louis area," the organizers of the protest action, which started on October 10, said.
"Power concedes nothing without a demand. On Monday, we're taking our cue from the fearless activists in North Carolina who were inspired to fight back against right-wing attacks there and across the South. They kicked off the Moral Mondays movement for progressive change by engaging in civil disobedience every week, reminding all of us that these actions have been a part of every major movement for change," the organizers said.
On Sunday morning, tensions mounted between local police and a group of demonstrators who held a sit-in at the entrance of a St. Louis convenience store and refused to move.
On Saturday, about a thousand people gathered near a police station in Ferguson to protest what they view as a series of racially motivated shootings of African-Americans by white police officers in the region.
The demonstrations follow the shooting of 18-year-old Vonderrit Myers in the Shaw neighborhood in St. Louis. Myers, an African-American, was shot at several times by an off-duty white police officer.
The incident took place just two months after Michael Brown, another African-American teenager of the same age, was shot and killed by a white police officer in Ferguson. The shooting led to massive protests, which forced Missouri Governor Jay Nixon to issue a state of emergency in the city.
