MOSCOW, October 13 (RIA Novosti) - South African amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius has arrived Monday at the Pretoria High Court for the sentencing hearing in which his punishment for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp will be determined.
The hearing is expected to last until October 16.
Pistorius shot his girlfriend dead in the early morning of February 14, 2013. According to the athlete, he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder and fired his 9-mm pistol four times through a closed bathroom door killing her.
Mid-September, the 27-year-old track star was found guilty of culpable homicide but was cleared of premediated murder by South African judge Thokozile Masipa in a ruling found unjust by many, including the Steenkamp family. Pistorius can now be punished by up to 15 years in prison but it is also possible that he will walk away a free man.
Oscar Pistorius is a South African sprint runner and six-time Paralympic Games champion. He has competed in events both for amputees and for able-bodied athletes.
