RIO DE JANEIRO, October 14 (RIA Novosti) - Brazil could become one of the main suppliers of meat to the Russian market, the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA) told RIA Novosti on Tuesday.

"Based on demand and limited offer, Brazilian companies have reduced their deliveries to other countries to meet Russia's needs," ABPA president Francisco Turra said.

According to ABPA, Russia now buys some 39.6 percent of Brazilian meat exports, an increase from 35.8 percent over the past few months. This figure indicates that Brazil could become one of the main suppliers of food products to Russia, which has introduced a one-year embargo on the import of certain foods from the European Union and the United States.

Since August, Brazilian companies have stepped up their production of frozen pork, beef and chicken to meet the demands of the Russian market. "In October, shipments of frozen meat to Russia should significantly increase," ABPA vice president Rui Eduardo Saldanha Vargas said.

On August 7, Russia introduced a one-year embargo on agricultural and food product imports from the countries that have imposed sanctions on Moscow over the Ukrainian crisis, namely Australia, Canada, the European Union, the United States and Norway. Banned products includes meat, poultry, fish, seafood, milk, dairy, fruit and vegetables.
