MOSCOW, October 14 (RIA Novosti) - Palestinians hope that the UK government will support the British House of Commons’ decision to recognize the Palestinian state in the near future, Palestinian National Authority's Foreign Minister said Tuesday.
“We hope that the government respects House of Commons’ decision and will soon announce its intention to recognize the Palestinian state,” Riyad Maliki said as quoted by Al Mayadeen news network.
“This is a serious step toward redeeming historical mistakes against Palestinian people,” he added.
On Monday, 274 British members of parliament voted in favor and 12 voted against the motion, which said that "this House believes that the Government should recognize the state of Palestine alongside the state of Israel."
Palestinians seek the creation of an independent state on the territories of the West Bank in East Jerusalem, partially occupied by Israel, and the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, and want Israel to withdraw from the Palestinian territories it took after the 1967 war.
By September 2013, the Palestinian State has been recognized by 134 UN member states, including Russia. However, none of the EU members have recognized the Palestinian state, except for the ones that have done so before joining the bloc.
