MOSCOW, October 15 (RIA Novosti) – The death toll from Typhoon Vongfong that slammed into Japan on Monday has risen to four, while another 99 people sustained injures and one more person is missing, local media reported Wednesday.
Two bodies were found in Ehime Prefecture on Tuesday, and another one in Aichi Prefecture, according to Kyodo news agency. On Monday, a 90-year-old man was reported dead in Tottori Prefecture.
The typhoon also injured at least 99 people in 25 prefectures, nearly half of Japan's provinces, according to broadcaster NHK. The missing man is a Chinese citizen who was washed away by high waves while fishing.
Local governments issued evacuation advisories to 1.76 million people nationwide. Storm warnings have been issued for 42 of 47 prefectures.
Some 50 residential buildings have been damaged and around 500 were flooded in nine provinces.
Japanese air carriers suspended 600 flights in recent days, while the West Japan Railway Company, the biggest railway company operating in southwestern Japan, canceled 1,200 trains on all 24 routes for the first time in its history.
Typhoon Vongfong, the strongest storm to hit Japan this year, has made landfall on the country's main islands on Monday. Japan's Meteorological Agency on Tuesday downgraded Vongfong from a typhoon to a tropical storm. However, some parts of the country still have high risks of landslides and avalanches due to heavy rains that fell across most of the country.
