MOSCOW, October 16 (RIA Novosti) - India has launched its third navigation satellite, equipped with a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C 26) carrying the IRNSS 1C satellite towards its geostationary orbit, NASA reported Thursday.
The liftoff occurred at 01:32 local time (00:02 Moscow Time) from the Satish Dhawan Space Center located in Sriharikota in Andra Pradesh.
"India has successfully launched IRNSS 1C. The entire ISRO team deserves congratulations", Indian Space Research Organisation chairman Koppillil Radhakrishnan was quoted as saying by NDTV.
IRNSS 1C is the third of the seven satellites which will ultimately form the Indian Regional Navigations Satellite System, a constellation of satellites designed to provide navigation data to India and surrounding region. It was targeted to be completed by 2015.
The first two satellites in the series – IRNSS 1A and IRNSS 1B - were orbited in July 2013 and April 2014 respectively.
RNSS’s applications include terrestrial and marine navigation, disaster management, vehicle tracking and fleet management, navigations aid for travelers, visual and voice navigation for drivers, according to ISRO.
