KIEV, October 16 (RIA Novosti) – Ukrainian leader Petro Poroshenko has redeployed eight helicopters from the United Nations (UN) humanitarian mission area to the southeast of Ukraine, the president wrote on Twitter Thursday.
"[I] revoked 8 modern helicopters from the United Nations humanitarian mission's area for their onward deployment in the anti-terrorist operation zone," Poroshenko wrote on Twitter.
At a September 5 meeting in Minsk, a trilateral Contact Group, consisting of representatives from Russia, Ukraine and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), agreed on a ceasefire. Nevertheless, it has been reported that since then, Kiev forces repeatedly attacked independence supporters’ positions and residential areas in the region.
In April, Kiev launched a military operation in Ukraine’s southeast in response to the local residents' refusal to recognize the new Ukrainian government that came to power as a result of a February coup. According to the latest UN report, the operation has claimed the lives of 3,660 and left 8,756 injured.
