MOSCOW, October 17 (RIA Novosti) – 13-year old Kirra-Belle Olsson was attacked by a shark while surfing off the New South Wales coast, the Guardian reported today.
Olsson was attacked by a one-meter (3.5-foot) long shark while surfing off Avoca Beach, about 95 kilometers (60 miles) north of Sydney on Friday morning. The shark bit her left leg, causing puncture wounds and a cut, the Australian said.
“It just swung me around and tried to pull me under and I saw the tail and… I really didn’t know what to do so I just started screaming”, Olsson told Australian Broadcasting Corp. at a hospital, as quoted by AP.
“I paddled… in shock I just started laughing, I was like, ‘Whoa, what the hell, I just got bitten by a shark’”
Lifeguards are currently monitoring the beach area and advising people not to enter the water, the Australian said.
A few weeks ago, a surfer was attacked by a four-meter (13-foot) long great white shark and part of his arm was torn off in Western Australia, AP reported. Despite sharks being common in Australian waters, fewer than two fatal shark attacks have been recorded in the country in recent decades.
