MOSCOW, October 17 (RIA Novosti) - The United Nations (UN) human rights representatives will visit the bankrupt US city of Detroit, Michigan, for a fact-finding public town hall meeting on humanitarian issues on October 19.
"International and locally known panelists will hear testimony from Michigan residents about water, sanitation and housing issues offered by victims of this crisis," the UN announcement of the meeting said.
UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Right to Safe Drinking Water and Sanitation Catarina de Albuquerque and Special Rapporteur on Adequate Housing Leilani Farha are expected to attend the meeting that will be held at the Wayne County Community College premises.
The meeting will take place in light of the city residents' water service being disconnected by the local authorities. Reportedly, the water shutoffs concern thousands of homes in Detroit where residents had not paid the bills.
Amid declining population and increasing unemployment, Detroit filed for bankruptcy in July 2013, with an estimated debt of $18 billion. The latest bankruptcy hearing is set to resume on October 20.
