UNITED NATIONS, October 17 (RIA Novosti) - The UN Security Council unanimously agreed to a Press Statement, condemning the killing of three UN peacekeepers in Darfur, western Sudan on Thursday.
The UN Security Council has"condemned in the strongest terms the attack on African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur peacekeepers in Korma, North Darfur, by a group of unidentified armed men on 16 October 2014, which resulted in the death of three Ethiopian peacekeepers," said the statement released on Thursday.
The members of the Security Council expressed their condolences to the families of the peacekeepers, as well as to the Government of Ethiopia and to the African Union – United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID). "They called on the Government of Sudan swiftly to investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice," the statement said.
The UN Security Council members also reiterated their support for UNAMID and called "on all parties in Darfur to cooperate fully with the mission."
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has also "strongly condemned" the attack in Darfur in a statement issued earlier on Thursday.
According to the UNAMID, three UN peacekeepers were attacked on Thursday near Korma, North Darfur, while they were guarding a water borehole. Two of them were shot dead and the third peacekeeper was wounded and later succumbed to his injuries.
This incident brought the number of peacekeepers who have been killed in Darfur to 61 since the inception of the UNAMID in 2007.
