MOSCOW, October 19 (RIA Novosti) - A major terrorist attack has been prevented in the city of Khasavyurt in Russia's southern republic of Dagestan, Russia's National Anti-Terrorism Committee said Sunday.
“Explosives experts from Russia's FSB [Federal Security Service] have identified the located object as a homemade explosive devise consisting of a container filled with an explosive substance with two radio-controlled actuators and two detonators. According to [the experts], the power of the explosive substance amounted to about 25 kilograms in TNT equivalent,” the committee said in a statement.
“Thanks to the vigilance of citizens and the prompt action of the security services, a crime that could have resulted in great loss of life has been timely prevented,” the statement read.
A suspicious object was found in Khasavyurt on Saturday, in the basement of an apartment building that is currently under construction. The area was cordoned and evacuated, and experts have now managed to deactivate the bomb using hydrodynamic cannon, the committee informed. A search for persons involved in the prevented terrorist attack has been launched.
