EU Unwilling to Lift Sanctions Against Russia in Near Future: Polish Foreign Minister

The European Union does not intend to lift its sanctions against Russia in the foreseeable future, the Polish Foreign Minister Grzegorz Schetyna said Monday.

WARSAW, October 20 (RIA Novosti) - The European Union does not intend to lift its sanctions against Russia in the foreseeable future, the Polish Foreign Minister Grzegorz Schetyna said Monday.

“It would be wrong if a review of the sanctions and their consequences would lead to their suspension. I believe that we should not allow such a situation,” the Polish minister is quoted as saying by the agency.

According to Schetyna, the foreign ministers of EU member states have unanimously agreed to uphold the sanctions imposed against Russia, the Polish Press Agency reported.

The European Union, alongside the United States, has imposed several rounds of sanctions against Russia, blaming Moscow for meddling in Ukraine's internal affairs – claims that Russia has repeatedly denied.

The sanctions target Russia’s banking, defense and energy sectors, as well as certain individuals. In August, Moscow was forced to introduce a ban on certain food imports from the countries that had previously imposed sanctions against Russia.
