MOSCOW, October 20 (RIA Novosti) - The National Hockey League team Los Angeles Kings expressed deep concern on Monday over arrest of Russian defenseman Vyacheslav Voynov on charges of domestic violence.
“These developments are of great concern to our organization. We support the NHL’s decision to suspend Slava Voynov indefinitely during this process, and we will continue to take appropriate action as the legal proceedings and the investigation by the NHL take their course,” a statement on official LA Kings’ website said.
On Monday morning, Voynov has been detained on suspicion of domestic violence and has been indefinitely suspended by the NHL from all club activities until the formal investigation into the case is over. The Russian player has been later released on $50,000 bail.
According to US media reports, the preliminary court hearing will be held on October, 22.
This is not the first time in NHL when a Russian player is detained on domestic violence charges. In November 2013, Colorado Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov was charged with a third-degree assault after his girlfriend alleged he knocked her to the ground, stomped on her chest and dragged her by the hair. After the investigation, prosecutors dropped charges against Varlamov.
