MOSCOW, October 20 (RIA Novosti) - Russia’s sixth seed contender Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova has beat Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu in the final round of the Kremlin Cup tournament on Sunday 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 in 2 hours and 28 minutes.
“It’s just the best possible way to finish the season,” Pavlyuchenkova said at the award ceremony. “It was a really tough match. We were both fighting but somebody had to win. I just couldn’t have lost at home.”
Pavlyuchenkova ensured the Cup will stay in house, for the first time since 2007, when Russian Elena Dementieva won the title.
Pavlyuchenkova became the fourth Russian woman in the history of the Cup to win the award. This is the 23-year-old’s seventh WTA crown and her second title this year. It will push her up to 24th in the world rankings.
The ATP Kremlin Cup title was won by Croatian second seed contender Marin Cilic, who overcame Spanish Roberto Batusta Agut 6-4 6-4.
