WASHINGTON, October 22 (RIA Novosti) - Sweden has not asked the United States for assistance in finding an alleged submarine in the Stockholm archipelago, Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby said.
“I am not aware of any outreach by the Swedish government for assistance and let me take that for the record nothing has certainly been made to me in terms of any request that they may have made,” Kirby stated Tuesday.
Swedish media reports claimed earlier the “suspicious object” was a Russian submarine. A spokesperson for the Russian Defense Ministry denied the claims Sunday, stating that “there have been no extraordinary, let alone emergency situations, involving Russian military vessels.”
Swedish forces first launched a major operation off the coast of Stockholm on October 19 after receiving information, reportedly from a civilian, about the presence of an unknown underwater object in the region, suspected to be a foreign submarine.
