WASHINGTON, October 22 (RIA Novosti) - The US officials take into consideration safety concerns of the inmates and work on them on case-by-case basis, a spokesperson for the US Federal Bureau of Prisons stated, commenting on the detainment conditions of Russian citizen Roman Seleznev.
“Although we do not comment on custody issues of any particular inmate, I can confirm that Roman Seleznev is currently confined at the Federal Detention Center in SeaTac, Washington, and that the institution's primary mission is to safely, securely, and humanely house individuals, who are pending trial or sentencing in federal court,” the official told RIA Novosti Tuesday, stressing that it is incumbent upon each detainee to communicate to any staff member about safety concerns they have.
“Such concerns are addressed on a case-by-case basis in a manner that best ensures the safe and orderly running of the institution,” he underlined.
Seleznev’s father is worried that his son is in danger as he is being provoked by his cellmates into fight.
Earlier in October, US federal prosecutors filed 11 new charges against Seleznev, bringing the total number of charges to 40. US prosecutors claim that, between October 2009 and October 2013, Seleznev allegedly hacked into retail point-of-sale systems and installed malicious software to steal more than two million credit card numbers from various businesses.
On July 5, Seleznev was detained by US secret service agents in the Maldives and brought to Guam, and later to Washington.
Russian Foreign Ministry and Seleznev's father deemed the detention as a "kidnapping".
Seleznev is to be tried on November 3 in Seattle. He faces up to 30 years in prison if found guilty. His father believes the hearing will be postponed.
