MOSCOW, October 22 (RIA Novosti) – Israel does not abide by the Cairo agreement and prevents the supply of humanitarian aid to Gaza, Qais Abdul Karim, member of the political bureau of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) and member of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) told RIA Novosti Wednesday.
"As you know, in order to put an end to aggression, talks were held as a result of which an agreement was reached on August 26, stipulating a ceasefire and the halt of military operations. In addition, it was agreed to open checkpoints on the border between Israel and Palestine in order to facilitate and restore supplies to the Gaza Strip," Karim said, adding that the Israeli side "has not fulfilled these agreements in full and still continues to hamper Gaza reconstruction.
"Israel is lingering with the implementation of this part of the agreement, despite the fact that it was mediated by the United Nations," Karim noted.
According to the official, there are a number of issues that have not been resolved by Israel and Palestine at all, such as the construction of a seaport and an airport in Gaza, as well as the release of prisoners that were captured by Israel after April 12, 2014 in Gaza and the West Bank.
"It has been agreed to discuss these issues during the next round of talks," Karim said.
On Tuesday, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for urgent humanitarian aid for Gaza, to help thousands of homeless people and boost reconstruction efforts.
According to UN estimates, the latest 50-day armed conflict in Gaza in June claimed the lives of over 2,100 Palestinians and about 70 Israelis before an open-ended ceasefire was agreed upon on August 26.
Palestinians seek the creation of an independent state on the territories of the West Bank in East Jerusalem, partially occupied by Israel, as well as on the Gaza Strip.
The Palestinian State has been recognized by 134 UN member states, including Russia.
