MOSCOW, October 22 (RIA Novosti) – The Moldovan Constitutional Court's remark on the unconstitutionality of political forces opposing the post-Soviet country's integration with the European Union is inconsistent with basic European values, Russian Foreign Ministry said in a Wednesday press release.
"Amid the unfolding campaign in preparation for the November 30 parliamentary election in Moldova … the Constitutional Court's recent decision that only a process towards European integration corresponds to [Moldova's] constitutional identity … causes alarm," the statement read.
The ministry added that the court's subsequent attempts to explain the motivation behind the decision have been unsound, stressing that the ruling could only be regarded as an outlawing of political movements with views different from those of the nation's governing coalition.
"The reasonable question arises on how such an approach corresponds to European values and basic principles of democracy – guaranteeing freethinking and pluralism of views – when Moldova has not held referendums on its citizens' foreign policy preferences," the statement continued.
The Russian Foreign Ministry concluded by highlighting the importance of transparency in the upcoming election.
On October 9, Moldova's Constitutional Court confirmed that the Association Agreement with the European Union, signed and ratified in the summer, was constitutional. In a press release, the body stressed that any political orientation opposing the process of Moldova's European integration is "unconstitutional a priori."
