MOSCOW, October 22 (RIA Novosti) - South Korean President Park Guen-hye has called on Wednesday for expanding cooperation with the United States, particularly in energy and healthcare sectors.

According to Yonhap news agency, Park made the statement during a meeting with US Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker. The sides met to discuss ways to cooperate in the future, as well as other issues, such as the economic situation and entrepreneurship.

Relations between the United States and South Korea have been extensive since 1950, as Washington was supporting Seoul during the Korean War. During the following decades, South Korea managed to reduce its dependency on the United States and achieved tremendous economic growth.

However, relations between the two countries strengthened again after the conservative President Lee Myung-Bak assumed office in 2008. South Korea is designated as the United States’ major non-NATO ally.
