MOSCOW, October 23 (RIA Novosti) - The Chinese leadership pledged on Thursday its commitment to the rule of law in a communique that also approved ongoing investigations into corruption cases against several Chinese high-fliers.
During the fourth plenary session of China's Communist Party (CPC) Central Committee it was agreed that independent courts should be "an important goal for socialist modernization", Xinhua cited the communique following the results of the meeting.
The communique also added the "the socialist rule of law" should have "Chinese characteristics".
Following the four-day plenum, CPC leaders said in a joint statement that rule of law was instrumental in continuing the nation's crackdown on corruption. They also approved the investigation into officials accused of corruption.
The four largest corruption cases involve former former CPC secretary of Chongqing, Bo Xilai, former politician and senior bureaucrat of the Ministry of Railways of the People's Republic of China, Liu Zhijun, ex- member of the CPC Politburo, Xu Caihou, and retired CPC leader Zhou Yongkang.
President Xi Jinping's anti-graft campaign pledged to target both "tigers and flies." Since November 2012, it has punished over 480 officials on corruption charges. Over 182,000 party officials at various levels have been investigated. The campaign has arrested 32 leaders ranked vice minister or above out of approximately 5,000 Chinese officials fitting that category.
