MOSCOW, October 23 (RIA Novosti) - The Los Angeles County district attorney's office has requested "additional follow-up" from police investigating the domestic violence charges against a hockey player for the Kings, Vyacheslav Voynov, Redondo Beach police Lt. Joe Hoffman said Thursday.
"Upon completion of the case review, the district attorney's office requested additional follow-up before making a determination on the filing of charges related to this investigation," Hoffman was quoted as saying by the Los Angeles Times.
The Russian hockey player was arrested on Monday following an alleged domestic violence incident in Redondo Beach involving a Russian woman, according to the Los Angeles Times. Voynov was released on $50,000 bail and immediately suspended by the NHL though continues to be paid.
Voynov's attorney, Craig Renetzky is thankful for the court's decision to further review the case and told The Times that he believed this was a "positive sign that they didn't file" charges against his client.
"I don't think they understand what occurred," Renetzky told the newspaper. "We're going to try to present some exonerating evidence hopefully in the next few days. I'm hoping the league will reconsider their position," the lawyer added.
According to Renetzky, the incident was a misunderstanding and any injuries suffered by the woman involved were an accident. The lawyer claims police misinterpreted the situation due to language issues.
Additional information surrounding the case will be provided to the district attorney's office before the court date set for December 1.
