MOSCOW, October 24 (RIA Novosti) - A former radiologist has been sentenced to 12 years' imprisonment in Ottawa, Canada, for encouraging terrorism.

"Mr. Ahmed has been convicted for terrorism offences," The Ottawa Citizen quoted Superior Court Justice Colin McKinnon as saying while delivering the sentence Thursday.

Misbahuddin Ahmed and his two alleged accomplices were arrested in 2010. In July, the court delivered a guilty verdict to 30-year-old Ahmed. He was also initially charged with manufacturing of explosives for terrorist purposes, but the charges were dropped.

According to the investigation, the radiologist and his accomplices were planning an attack on a military base, which was usually attended by the Minister of Defense and other senior military officials. During the searches conducted in the suspects' houses, a lot of of manuals on how to manufacture explosive devices were found.

In September, the leader of the gang Hiva Mohammad Alizadeh was sentenced to 24 years in prison. The third accused, Khurram Sher, was acquitted.

Misbahuddin Ahmed was sentenced a day after Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, 32, shot dead a soldier guarding the National War Memorial in Ottawa. Zehaf-Bibeau then proceeded to Parliament Hill's Center Block, where he was killed in a shootout with a policeman. Due to this, the courtroom was secured like never before while Superior Court Justice Colin McKinnon was delivering the sentence to Ahmed.
