MOSCOW, October 25 (RIA Novosti) - Previous US military operations in Iraq were a mistake and delaying the plans could have allowed advisory discussions with NATO, the Director of NATO Information Office in Moscow, Robert Pszczel said.
"Mistakes happen, most good organizations and the most interesting countries make mistakes. But you know, the one who does not make mistakes, is the one who says nothing," Pszczel said on Russian radio station Kommersant FM Friday night.
"NATO has some experience, there are forms of discussion. Theoretically 28 countries can be wrong, but the chances that they will make a big mistake are less than if the decision is made by one country or two or three," Pszczel added.
He noted that if plans for military operations in Iraq were brought before the alliance, the United States would have been assisted in making more informed decisions before invading Iraq in 2003.
The Iraq War, also known as the Second Gulf War, began in March 2003 as an effort to overthrow the regime of Saddam Hussein based on a claim which was later disproved accusing the leader of ties to terrorist organizations and the possession of chemical weapons of mass destruction. The United States led a coalition of countries into battle against Iraqi military and paramilitary forces and formally ended the conflict in 2011 leaving Iraqi responsible for maintaining security in their own country.
