KIEV, October 26 (RIA Novosti) - Ukraine's Parliamentary Speaker Oleksandr Turchynov on Sunday called on "all democratic forces" in the future Ukrainian parliament to engage in talks on the creation of a pro-European coalition right after the elections.
"All democratic forces that have made it to the Verkhovna Rada must team up in the next few days, after the parliament begins its work, to secure the parliament majority and form a new government," Turchynov said.
Turchinov has been nominated as a candidate for the parliamentary election by Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk's party called People's Front. The speaker said he hoped that the majority of lawmakers in the new parliament would back the candidature of Arseniy Yatsenyuk as the country's new prime minister.
"The support of the People's Front indicates that our Ukrainian citizens, our wise Ukrainians have recognized the professionalism of the incumbent prime minister, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, as well as his readiness to work in difficult and dangerous conditions," Turchynov stressed.
"I hope that the People's Front will become the backbone of the new [parliamentary] majority and together we will nominate Arseniy Yatsenyuk for the prime minister, and his candidature will be upheld by the parliament," he said.
Turchynov added that preliminary results of the parliamentary polls would serve as a signal for all pro-EU lawmakers to ready paperwork that is necessary to form a coalition.
"I believe that as soon as the Central Election Commission makes preliminary results known we should take it as a signal for direct talks and start preparing coalition documents, as well as consider a new Cabinet lineup," he explained.
Turchynov pointed out that the pro-European coalition could secure a supermajority of 300 seats in the 450-seat unicameral parliament, known as the Verkhovna Rada.
A snap parliamentary election wrapped up Sunday in Ukraine. Only 423 deputies are expected to be elected, according to the Central Election Commission, which has ruled out any voting in 12 districts of Crimea as well as 15 districts in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. The electoral threshold has been set at five percent.
According to an international exit poll, President Petro Poroshenko's party called Poroshenko's Bloc is closely followed by Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk's People's Front with some 21.8 percent, Samopomoshch (Selfhelp) party headed by mayor of Lviv Andriy Sadovy is in the third place with some 13.2-14.2 percent.
Turchinov, who also served as a parliament speaker, said he hoped that the majority of lawmakers in the new parliament would back the candidature of Arseniy as the country’s new prime minister.
“The support of the People’s Front indicates that our Ukrainian citizens, our wise Ukrainians have recognized the professionalism of the incumbent prime minister, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, as well as his readiness to work in difficult and dangerous conditions,” Turchinov stressed.
“I hope that the People’s Front will become the backbone of the new [parliamentary] majority and together we will nominate Arseniy Yatsenyuk for the prime minister, and his candidature will be upheld by the parliament,” he said.
