KIEV, October 27 (RIA Novosti) — Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has discussed the issue of forming a parliamentary coalition in the country's parliament with Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, Poroshenko's press secretary said Monday.
"The head of state is working on the creating of a powerful democratic coalition in parliament. For that purpose Petro Poroshenko held a meeting with Arseniy Yatsenyuk," the press secretary said.
"The talks continue," he added.
A snap parliamentary election was held in Ukraine on October 26. The turnout stood at 52.42 percent, the Ukraine's Central Election Commission said.
More than 70 percent of ballots have been counted so far. The People's Front of Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk is in the lead with 21.80 percent of the vote, while the country's President Petro Poroshenko's Bloc is close behind with 21.46 percent. Both parties support closer ties with Europe and want to see Ukraine a member of the European Union within six years.
President Poroshenko said earlier he considered Yatsenyuk's party a strong partner candidate for the creation of a parliamentary coalition.
On the heels of the election on Sunday, Ukraine's Parliament Speaker Oleksandr Turchynov of the People's Front urged pro-European parties to start preparing all necessary paperwork right after the early results were announced.
He said the coalition talks would also determine the future head of state, but said he hoped that the candidature of the incumbent prime minister, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, would be confirmed.
