EU May Fine UK for Refusing to Pay Additional $2.6 Billion to EU Budget

European Union could fine Britain for not paying an additional contribution to EU budget.

BRUSSELS, October 27 (RIA Novosti) — The United Kingdom may be fined for not paying an additional contribution to EU budget on time, EU budget commissioner Jacek Dominik said at a press conference on Monday.

“On the 1st of December this year this amount should be delivered to the EU budget. If not, the commission services will send a letter saying that a certain amount of money is missing … Then, if this does not improve the situation in following weeks and months, there will be a moment when the Commission will start imposing late payment fines,” the official said.

Dominik also argued that the United Kingdom was fully informed of the recalculated amount of its contribution to EU budget as early as on October 17, a week before David Cameron’s emotional refusal to pay an additional $2.66 billion to the EU budget made at an October 24 EU Summit.

At the summit, outgoing President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso said that Brussels’ demand to increase the UK contribution is correspondent to the rules, approved by the member nations. Adjustments on the contributions’ amounts are made annually concerning the states’ gross national income (GNI). The recalculation takes effect on the first working day of December.
