According to Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, upcoming elections in the Donetsk and Luhansk self-proclaimed people’s republics grossly contradict the September 5 Minsk protocol wording and essence.

KIEV, October 28 (RIA Novosti) – Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko believes the upcoming elections in the self-proclaimed people’s republics of Donetsk and Luhansk (DPRD and LPR) threaten the peace process in the region, his press secretary said Tuesday.

“The President’s stand with regard to the pseudo-elections that are planned to be held by terrorists and that that will never be recognized by the world – these pseudo-elections that have been scheduled in the so-called DPR and LPR for the beginning of November, not only have anything to do with the September 5, 2014 Minsk protocol, but grossly contradict its wording and essence. They threaten the entire peace process,” Svyatoslav Tsegolko wrote on his Facebook page.

“The President stressed that regional elections in separate areas of Donbas can only be held in accordance with the Ukrainian law,” Tsegolko added.

A military confrontation in southeast Ukraine started in mid-April, when Kiev sent troops to suppress independence supporters who refused to recognize the government that came to power after the February coup.

The leaders of the DPR and the LPR have laid claim to the whole territory within the borders of the respective administrative entities in Ukraine and want full independence for their regions.

Both self-proclaimed republics have set elections of regional leaders and legislative bodies for November 2.
